SUMMARY:The Way of Shamatha: Soothing the Body\, Settling the Mind\, and Illuminating Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Six Day Residential Retreat with Dr. B. Alan Wallace \nDuring this retreat\, we will explore in theory and practice a range of methods for developing meditative quiescence\, or shamatha. We will begin with the practice of mindfulness of the breathing as taught by the Buddha\, which is an especially effective approach to soothing the body and calming the discursive mind. We will then explore an approach to shamatha that is particularly pertinent for Dzogchen practice\, called “settling the mind in its natural state\,” as taught by the nineteenth-century Dzogchen master Lerab Lingpa in his commentary to the Heart Essence of Vimalamitra. Finally\, we will engage in the practice of “shamatha without signs” as taught by Padmasambhava in his classic terma Natural Liberation. Although this subtle practice is taught explicitly as a means of achieving shamatha\, Padmasambhava comments that it may even result in a realization of rigpa\, or pristine awareness. The achievement of shamatha is widely regarded in the Buddhist tradition as an indispensable foundation for the cultivation of contemplative insight (vipashyana)\, and this retreat is designed to provide students with a sufficient theoretical understanding and a basis in experience to enable them to proceed effectively toward this extraordinary state of mental and physical balance. \nDynamic lecturer\, progressive scholar\, and one of the most prolific writers and translators of Tibetan Buddhism in the West\, B. Alan Wallace\, Ph.D.\, continually seeks innovative ways to integrate Buddhist contemplative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind. \nDr. Wallace\, a scholar and practitioner of Buddhism since 1970\, has taught Buddhist theory and meditation worldwide since 1976. Having devoted fourteen years to training as a Tibetan Buddhist monk\, ordained by H. H. the Dalai Lama\, he went on to earn an undergraduate degree in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College and a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. \nWith his unique background\, Alan brings deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhism with the modern world.

SUMMARY:Winter Retreat 2017
DESCRIPTION:« Contemplation on the four thoughts that turn the mind from Samsara » With Dungsey Lhuntrul Dechen Gyurmey Rinpoche \nPreliminary practices are the first step to the commencement of Dharma practice. The Tibetan term Ngöndro literally means “something that is placed before\, that precedes”. Two kinds of preliminary practices can be found: the first is called common or ordinary and the second special or extraordinary.\nOrdinary preliminaries consist of a series of deep reflections on “the four thoughts that help turn the mind.” They divert it from imprisonment in samsara and turn it toward the practice of Dharma.\nThis winter retreat in complete silence\, will be the opportunity to plunge into the very foundations of Buddhist practice with the guidance of a highly qualified Master.\nNormal price: 305 CHF / 280 € Reduced price**: 215 CHF / 195 € \nWith Dungsey Lhuntrul Dechen Gyurmey Rinpoche\, highly accomplished master of rituals in the Vajrayana Buddhism tradition\, he was recognized as the reincarnation of Jigme Tempay Gyeltsen\, the third Tamdrin Lhunpo Chogtrul.

SUMMARY:Awakening Presence in Relationships
DESCRIPTION:With Florence Meleo-Meyer\nRipa International Center/Landguet Ried – Bern – Switzerland \nInsight Dialogue meditation I Teachings I Noble Silence \nAbout the retreat\nAs humans we are exquisitely sensitive\, every moment awash in a sea of contact. Touching and being touched\, feeling\, perceiving\, and thinking\, we create our world. Can we cultivate awareness in these dynamic moments of contact? Is it possible that human relationships are one of the best fields for cultivating mindfulness? From birth\, we have been designed for attunement with others. The absence of attunement is a significant source of stress. With the support of each other’s awareness and kind intention to pay attention the very act of communicating becomes an opportunity for awakening our inherent capacities for love\, joy\, and wisdom. \nBased on the meditation practice of Insight Dialogue\, the awareness\, mental stability\, and calmness associated with silent meditation are developed in practice with others. Seeing and being seen\, hearing and being heard\, the heart and mind open\, and greater mental flexibility develops. \nPracticing with the six Insight Dialogue guidelines\, one learns to pause out of the habit mind\, notice tensions and relax\, kindly accept present moment experience\, open and trust emergence\, and\, listen deeply and speak the truth of our subjective experience. The three bases of Insight Dialogue\, meditation\, dharma and relationship form the foundation and path of transformation in the good company of other meditators. \nThis retreat combines silent practice with carefully guided Insight Dialogue meditation\, Dharma talks\, and time in nature\, all within the container of noble silence. \nAbout the teacher\nFlorence Meleo-Meyer\, MS\, MA\, is director of Train the Trainer Program in Oasis Institute\, Mindfulness- Based Professional Education and Training at the Center for Mindfulness\, in Medicine\, Healthcare and Society\, (CFM) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School\, in Worcester\, Massachusetts. \nDuring the retreat\, Florence Meleo Meyer will be assisted by Silvia Wiesmann\, co-director of the European Center for Consciousness (EZFA) in Freiburg\, Germany ; and Geneviève Hamelet\, founding member and president of the Association for the Development of Mindfulness in French-speaking countries.

SUMMARY:The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This weekend will enable participants to delve into the origins of Mindfulness\, as defined and taught within the tradition of Buddhist psychology\, with ‘The Four Foundations of Mindfulness.’ \nWith Geneviève Hamelet\, instructor of MBSR and President for the Association for the Development of Mindfulness (ADM) in France. \n=>Register \nFull Awareness Workshop at the RIC – February 2016 \nWith the emergence of “full consciousness” programs\, such as MBSR and MBCT\, it may be particularly beneficial to dive into the source of Full Consciousness as it is defined and transmitted within the tradition of Buddhist psychology\, with “The Four Bases of Attention\,” or “Mahasatipathana Sutta\,” the Great Discourse of the Buddha on the Establishment of Full Consciousness. \nIf these teachings and practices from the Sutras are still so striking for our modern world\, it is because it appeals to the universality of our humanity\, whatever the epoch\, the culture or the spiritual tradition to which we belong . \nIndeed\, the Buddhist approach is a holistic approach to being in its philosophical and psychological aspects\, in conjunction with religious practices. \nThese four areas of exploration consist of a real investigation of the nature of reality\, starting from the body to gradually penetrate the nature of phenomena. \nThese two days will be devoted to study and practice\, focusing on the direct experience of this natural quality of attentive presence or Full Consciousness\, through the four areas of exploration that are: body\, feelings\, mental states\, and phenomena. \nGeneviève Hamelet  \nShe teaches meditation at the Tarab Institute\, where she graduated in 2005 from Semrig Thablam Mawa (STM) in “Internal Science of the Spirit and UD Phenomena\,” an approach to Buddhist psychology\, created by Tarab Tulku Rinpoche and Lene Handberg\, to promote the universality of ancient Indo-Tibetan spiritual wisdom in the modern world. \nShe is also a Certified MBSR instructor (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program)\, trained at CFM-UMass Medical school\, where she is also instructor. She was also trained in MBCT in 2008. \nShe has been a member of the selection and organizing committee of ESRI 2016: “European Summer Research Institute” of Mind & Life Europe\, and participates in the FBT CA to organize visits and teachings of the Dalai Lama in France. \nShe has been interpreting for 15 years many teachers of meditation of different traditions\, such as Akincano\, Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Jack Kornfield\, Tara Brach\, Frank Ostaseski\, Bob Stahl\, Ajahn Sucitto and Rebecca Crane.

SUMMARY:Vipassana meditation retreat in full silence
DESCRIPTION:With Dungsey Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche \nApproaching emptiness and the nature of reality \nThe experience of emptiness is one of the most puzzling aspects of Buddha’s teachings; while we can intuitively relate to the truth of impermanence to some extent\, it is difficult for most of us to understand the notion of emptiness which is often likened to a big vacuum or some sort of state of deprivation; yet\, according to Buddha’s teachings\, the experience of emptiness plays a central role in liberating beings from pain and suffering.\nDuring this end-of-year retreat\, Dungsey Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoché will guide participants into exploring the experience of emptiness as the key insight into transforming our lives. Building on basic teachings and guided practice\, he will train participants into developing “ways of looking” that help free the mind from conceptual fabrication. \nRETREAT IN FULL SILENCE. \nPrerequisite: meditation experience

SUMMARY:Kado – the way of flowers
DESCRIPTION:WITH MAY ISLER \nIkebana as meditation \nUsing the wisdom of nature\, the creative meditation of Kado teaches us to see things clearly as they are. This enables us to develop a better acceptance of obstacles and respectful relationship with nature\, with ourselves and with others. \nThe chinese term of “Kado” means “The Way of Flowers” and was first developed in China over 2300 years ago. When it was introduced and assimilated into Japan\, the Japanese word “Ikebana” arose\, meaning “living or natural flowers”. Kado is a contemplative practice that studies nature as it is and hence\, humans being part of the all compassing nature\, we simultaneously study ourselves as we are when working with natural materials in Kado. \nThe ultimate purpose in Kado is not to make pleasant flower arrangements\, but cultivate appreciation for each moment\, to work with obstacles\, and to develop respect for ourselves\, others and all forms of life. \nWith May Isler – she has been student of Marcia Shibata for 20 years and is authorized to conduct workshops as part of the Shambhala Kado Rigden Ikebana School.

SUMMARY:Shiné/Shamata: The practice of calm abiding
DESCRIPTION:With Nathalie Bourquin \nBy using the breath as a guide\, the external and internal distractions are pacified\, so that the thoughts and emotional turmoil of the mind are brought to rest (SHI = pacify)\, and thus one returns to one’s internal center and abides there ( NE = remain). Learn how a calmer\, more relaxed and more spacious mind makes dealing with one’s self and with others easier and more enjoyable. We will do sitting practice\, and between sessions\, to support us – some movement (for body awareness)\, as well as listen to music\, and share wisdom stories. Included is a round of interpersonal exchange\, which brings us knowledge about ourselves\, and shows us how our mind works. \nExperienced meditators and newcomers are equally welcome!

SUMMARY:YOGOM ® – Yoga / Meditation
DESCRIPTION:With François Bertolero \nThe targeted body and breathing exercises of YOGOM ® are a natural transition for the practice of sitting Shamatha meditation\, connecting body and mind directly.\nUnder the inspiration of Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche\, Yogom® was developed through the Buddhist mindfulness method that we prefer to call presence of mind. Yogom® is the anteroom and the threshold of calm abiding meditation. This unique method starts before meditation to facilitate sitting in the physical sense as well as in the psychic sense. Adaptive training is done to ensure that postures are accessible to everyone\, as well as rhythmic breathing exercises and a working sitting position\, which opens the door to true yoga. The first benefit of the comfort provided in the sitting posture is to fully unlock the road to the more subtle meditation practices. The development of the seat thus naturally continues until achieving the mind of calming abiding through Shamata (Shiné) meditation.

SUMMARY:Promoting mental resilience and well-being
DESCRIPTION:WITH DIEGO HANGARTNER \nA scientific and experimental approach \nOne of the most persistent\, frustrating issues facing us today is that we lack mental wellbeing\, often feeling restless\, anxious\, and inattentive. \nOver the last 10 years a growing body of evidence from the highest level of scientific research has emerged\, and has confirmed the mental and physical benefits of mind training\, also known as meditation. \nThe main purpose of this programme called the “Wheel of Mental Balance” is to develop mental balance and resilience in a modern context. It combines techniques and processes found in classical Buddhist texts\, extracting the values of practical application without compromising the source materials. Based on traditional meditation practices\, the programme incorporates and builds on insights stemming from current neuroscientific and clinical research. \nBased on a profound conceptual framework\, the program represents a collection of proven\, practical methods whose purpose is to overcome hindrances in the midst of our daily lives\, and to enable and find mental balance. \nAddressed to individuals and professionals of all walks of life wishing to discover or to deepen their knowledge and experience of meditation and learn more about its role in promoting mental balance and resilience in daily life. \nIn order to fully benefit from the experience\, we strongly recommend participants to stay on the premises overnight. \nDiego Hangartner\, Pharm.D.\, [b. 1962] completed his studies in pharmacology at the ETHZurich. He lived for 11 years in Dharamsala\, India\, learned Tibetan\, and studied for 7 years at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. He has completed many retreats\, worked as an interpreter\, translating Tibetan into many languages\, and published a few books. \nOn returning to Europe in 2003\, he taught widely\, and organized several large events with His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, and participated in research aimed at exploring the benefits of meditation as a long-term practitioner. \nDiego is associated and worked with the Mind and Life Institute (Dialogues between science and Buddhism) since the 1990’s: he was Mind and Life’s COO from 2009 – 2012 in the USA\, co-founded Mind and Life Europe\, and was its director until 2014. He was actively involved in research projects. \nDiego founded the “Institute of Secular Ethics and Mental Balance” (ISEMB)\, an interdisciplinary initiative to provide tools and programs that foster mental balance\, and created “The Wheel of Mental Balance”.
